Tomato Pickle
Tomato Pachadi - Spicy, Tangy, Gone Before You Know It
Hot rice. A spoon of ghee. One big scoop of Tomato Pachadi. That's a meal. That's also a problem - because you'll want another bowl immediately.
Nirmala's Tomato Pickle is made from ripe, juicy tomatoes slow-cooked down with Guntur red chilli, mustard seeds, fenugreek, garlic, and cold-pressed peanut oil until every drop of water is gone and all that's left is pure, concentrated flavour. No water content means no need for preservatives - just the tomatoes doing what they do best, intensified.
Ingredients: Ripe tomatoes, Guntur red chilli powder, mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, garlic, turmeric, rock salt, cold-pressed peanut oil.
Works as a spread on dosa, a side with idli, a companion to curd rice, or just mixed into plain hot rice with a little ghee. The kind of pickle that makes you skip the sabzi entirely.
Shelf life: 3-4 months. Available in 250g, 500g, and 1kg jars.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this made from raw or cooked tomatoes?
Cooked. Ripe tomatoes are slow-cooked in cold-pressed peanut oil until all moisture is fully removed. This concentrates the flavour, extends shelf life naturally, and gives the pickle its deep, rich taste - very different from raw tomato versions.
How long does it stay fresh once opened?
3-4 months stored in a cool, dry place with a dry spoon. Tomato pickle has a shorter shelf life than mango or amla pickle because of the higher moisture content in tomatoes - but it rarely lasts that long once opened.
Does it contain garlic?
Yes, fresh garlic is one of the key ingredients. It adds depth and the classic Andhra spice character.
How spicy is it?
It carries a good Andhra heat - bold but not overwhelming. The natural sweetness of ripe tomatoes balances the Guntur chilli well. If you enjoy Andhra-style pickles, the spice level will feel right at home.
What can I eat it with?
Hot rice with ghee is the classic. It also works beautifully as a dosa spread, a side with idli or upma, mixed into curd rice, or spread on chapati and paratha. Some people even use it as a sandwich spread - it works surprisingly well.
Does it contain any artificial preservatives?
None. The slow-cooking process removes all moisture from the tomatoes, which is what preserves this pickle naturally - no sodium benzoate, no artificial additives of any kind.
